Tech anticipation now and then

Just came across a year 2007 post by current CTO of Cisco who was then CTO of Motorola, the post of in response to announcement of iPhone by Apple. Those serious doubts expressed by Ms. Padmashree Warrior sounds funny now. Enjoy how she was caught on wrong side while reading the post while witnessing the success of iPhone. Which changed the mobile world dramatically.

Google Chrome OS

Google has announced their new Operating System for computers named Google Chrome.

The official announcement on Google blogs says "We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be".

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks and it is a separate project from Android.

The new OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year.

Samsung S5230 and S5600

Up here is Samsung's pair of fresh ones destined for Europe over the coming months. The S5230 tops out at EDGE speeds but features a commendable 3-inch WQVGA display, 3 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, FM radio, and naturally, TouchWiz -- and it's all a mere 11.9mm thin. The other one is real high-speed S5600 at 7.2Mbps HSDPA on the 900 and 2100MHz bands -- only problem is, you've got to step down to a 2.8-inch QVGA display to get it. It'll slide into retail come May, while the S5320 gets a little bit of a jump start, hitting shelves in April.

Corsair's 256GB SSD

Here is Corsair's 256 GB SSD that delivers 170MB/sec average read and write speeds. We know, those numbers aren't going to shatter any records. So the benchmarking fiends over at HotHardware managed to scoop up a 256GB S256 from the company and put it through the first of many tests. As for results? Early reports show average read speeds nailing the 200MB/sec mark.

The only issue is the breathtaking $749 price tag (expected, anyway), but at least you've apparently got a few months to save up.

Hitachi Wooo plasmas

This year's edition of the Hitachi Wooo line of flat panels look a lot like their predecessors on the outside (120Hz IPS LCDs, 250GB HDD equipped models with iVDR slots for additional hard drives and Wooonet DLNA network support) but it's what's inside that counts. The four new XP plasma models range from 42- to 50-inches and promise even better contrast ratios, as high as 40,000:1, with better color reproduction and the promise of greater energy efficiency. The ultra-thin 35mm / 1.4-inch thick LCDs are back in four new models, with UWB wirelessly connected tuners, auto sensing/adjusting brightness and aforementioned "eco" power sipping improvements. The relatively fat XP line of LCDs consists of just three displays, but just like all the rest, buyers can still hook up to the 'net and pull down video on-demand or Yahoo! Japan's web TV portal -- features unlikely to make the jump when we see U.S. versions of these later this year. The XP plasmas and LCDs go on sale in Japan later this month or next, while the ultra-thins will be crash dieting until October.

Olympus E-450

E-450, an upgraded version of the E-420 compact DSLR from Olympus. The new E-450 is essentially identical to the E-420 except the addition of 3 Art Filters, a new processor and an improved LCD display. Priced at £450 for the standard lens kit, it will start shipping from May 2009.

It's perhaps a testament to how well specified the E-420 is that Olympus has clearly struggled for ways to improve it. For fear of treading on the toes of the recently announced E-620 (which itself stands uncomfortably close to the more expensive E-30), Olympus has engineered a model with the fewest changes over the existing version we've ever seen. And, despite the company's insistence that it will continue to offer four entry-level cameras, we do not believe the E-450 is distinct enough from the E-420 that they two can sensibly co-exist.

Samsung 12 megapixels

This one is TL320 from Samsung Electronics two 12 mega-pixel compact digital cameras boasting 24mm ultra-wide angle Schneider lenses. Samsung's new TL320 raises the bar for innovation in the digital imaging industry as it is the world's first digital camera to feature a three-inch AMOLED screen with HVGA resolution. The new HZ15W, Samsung's second mega-zoom, point-and-shoot digital camera, offers consumers one of the most powerful lenses on a compact point-and-shoot with an impressive focal length of 24-240mm (35mm film equivalent).

The new TL320 goes above and beyond traditional compact point-and-shoot digital cameras, offering an impressive list of features that set the camera apart from the competition. The TL320 features a Schneider lens, renowned for quality and trusted by professionals worldwide, and offers consumers a more versatile 24mm ultra-wide angle focal length paired with a powerful 5x optical zoom.

Utilizing the same advanced technologies found in its revolutionary AMOLED televisions, Samsung was able to incorporate a three-inch, 460,000-dot HVGA AMOLED screen in the new TL320, the largest AMOLED screen on a digital camera to date. In comparison to a traditional TFT-LCD screen, the TL320's AMOLED consumes less power and offers a higher contrast ratio of 10,000:1, producing darker black levels, more vibrant colors, and a brighter display which can easily be viewed outdoors and even in direct sunlight. Additionally, unlike a TFT-LCD, the TL320's AMOLED screen has the ability to display images that can be reviewed at any angle, while fully maintaining the same color gamut. The official specs sheets lists a 12.2 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 3-inch HVGA AMOLED display, 720p movie recording, HDMI output, dual image stabilization and twin analog gauges for checking out memory capacity and battery life. As for the ZH15W, that one checks in with a dozen megapixels even, a 10x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD monitor, 720p movie mode and most of the same features as the aforementioned cousin.

Windows Server 2008 Foundation released

Microsoft has announced the release of Windows Server 2008 Foundation. Codenamed Lima once upon a time, this release is being billed as a low cost alternative to Windows Small Business Server. Squarely aimed at the OEM set (Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and various Chinese software pirating syndicates have already have expressed interest), this licensing scheme limits the server to fifteen users (even as a member server on a Windows domain), doesn't include hypervisor, and does away with the need for Client Access Licenses (CALs). With today's announcement, Foundation is available in 40 countries in English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish.

Built for small businesses with 15 or fewer users, Windows Server 2008 Foundation puts the reliability, security and manageability of the Windows Server platform within the reach of all businesses at an affordable price.

iPhone OS 3.0

Apple has just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search. Improvements include:

App and developer functionality
  • Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
  • Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
  • Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
  • Devs can also connect with hardware accessories over in their apps now, such as a blood pressure monitor -- or perhaps a keyboard? Connectivity works through the dock connector or over Bluetooth.
  • Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
  • Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
General functionality

Windows Mobile 6.5 now official

Windows Mobile 6.5 is now official. The latest rendition of Microsoft's mobile platform puts an emphasis on touch-friendliness with a honeycomb-style main menu that the company says is easier to finger than a traditional grid layout; a new lock screen that can be slid on different alerts to automatically call up texts, voice mails, and so on; a thoroughly-restyled cut of Internet Explorer Mobile that features a touchable zoom slider and frequently-used commands; redesigned menus that don't need a stylus to actuate; fingerable home and contacts screens, and more. It's not the thorough gutting of the platform many were hoping for, but for anyone thinking that Windows Mobile 6.1 can stand another facelift without ending up looking like Joan Rivers, 6.5's clearly your baby. Sadly, Microsoft's saying that no devices in the market today will receive official 6.5 updates, but don't pull out your wallets just yet, though -- the first devices with Windows Mobile 6.5 preinstalled should be available in the fourth quarter of the year.

Olympus Mju Tough series

Olympus has introduced a new range of Mju Tough compact cameras in January 2009. Olympus’ new range is freezeproof, waterproof and shockproof and will be renamed from Mju SW to Mju Tough .

“Since some of our cameras even go beyond shockproof and waterproof – certain models are freezeproof and crushproof as well – we needed a name that was more reflective of the true nature of the SW series. The Mju TOUGH brand lets our customers know what these cameras truly have to offer: strength that’s always ready to go, even in the most extreme conditions”. explained Miquel Angel Garcia, Managing Director Marketing at Olympus Imaging Europa GmbH.

2012 - A target date for universal cellphone charger

The GSM Association has now announced that it and 17 of its partner companies are indeed working on a universal cellphone charger, and that they plan to have a common format in place by 2012. That rather ambitious date will be a bit easier to meet considering the group's choice of connector, micro-USB, which has already gained quite a bit of acceptance as a common format. The use of micro-USB apparently won't be firm requirement by 2012, however, with the GSMA simply saying that the "majority" of new phones sold by then will support what they're describing as the universal charging solution (or UCS), which itself will have to meet a number of strict requirements in order to be broadly compatible. Of course, while everyone including the likes of Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson have signed on with the GSMA, there are a few big names absent, not the least of which, unsurprisingly, is Apple, so there's certainly still quite a ways to go before we have a truly universal standard.

Skype 4.0 released

Skype has launched version 4.0 for Windows offering full-screen video calling, a new built-in bandwidth manager that optimizes calls in relation to your connection, a new audio codec which promises wideband audio quality using 50% less bandwidth than required by previous versions, plus a number of changes designed to make the user experience easier.

The changes to service include making it easier to start a face-to-face video call, a management system that makes the most of low-bandwidth connections and for those on 400 Kb/s or higher (plus a dual-core processor PC and a High Quality Video webcam), video at up to 30-frames-per-second.

On the audio side there's improved quality with less bandwidth plus "crystal clear, richer and warmer" super wideband audio when using a high quality broadband connection. Skype says that its bandwidth managing system also assists in getting the most reliable sound from your connection by interacting with the codec to adjust to fluctuations.

Usability improvements include easier headset, microphone and webcam set-up, a new Conversations Tab for tracking of multiple conversations and a choice of two different views - a single window "Default View" or a or Compact View in which you can resize conversation into separate windows.

Coming soon ... Palm Pre with WebOS

That's Palm pre the next exciting launch of Palm. Another new expectation about the Palm pre is it's completely original operating system called webOS which incorporates some pretty heady ideas about what a mobile phone can do.

The specs would look like
  • 3.1-inch touch screen (320 x 480)
  • 3 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • IM/SMS/MMS messaging support
  • Bluetooth 2/1+EDR and AD2P
  • 3G EVDO Rev A
  • 8GB on-board storage
  • microUSB port
  • USB mass storage support
  • Bluetooth/USB tethering
  • "Synergy" synchronization pulls data from your online/offline mail and social networking accounts
  • Built-in support for wireless charging with optional "Touchstone" charger
  • Copy and paste support
  • GPS with turn-by-turn navigation
  • TI's OMAP3430 System-on-Chip (SoC) running at an as-yet-unannounced clockspeed (up to 1GHz)
  • Slide-out QWERTY keyboard
  • Removable battery
  • E-mail: Microsoft Outlook/Microsoft Direct Push and POP3/IMAP support
  • Video: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264
  • Audio: MP3, AAC, AAC+, WAV
  • Wireless: 802.11b/g

The casing of the phone is made from sleek, glossy plastic, and the 3.1-inch touchscreen is adores the face of the device, just like the iPhone or Touch Diamond. The phone has a bit of a curve to its body both in the back and around the sides, but would easily slip into a pocket. When you slide out the QWERTY keyboard, it has an almost curved banana-like shape to it, curving slightly to meet the contours of your hand and face. As you might expect, it feels great in the hand -- it's slightly smaller than an iPhone when closed, slightly larger when open, and roughly the same width.

On the bottom half of the phone below the screen is a black "gesture area" used for finger and thumb swipes. In the center of that space is a small metallic ball, which looks like a movable trackball, but is actually just a button. It's used to call up one of the most important parts of the UI, the "cards," but not much else. The black space is dotted with soft LED lights that glow when you swipe your finger across it -- a nice touch.

The screen itself is a sensitive capacitive touchscreen, which is as responsive (if not more) than the iPhone's display. The resolution is the same as Apple's device (480 x 320), though due to its smaller size, it has slightly higher pixel density. Colors looked bright and clear, and overall the screen was sharp and easy to read. The high gloss may cause issues in the sun, but most modern touchscreen phones seem to deal with the problem, and we expect no less from this one.

The phone will be released in at least two versions to start. The first, a Sprint exclusive, sports EV-DO Rev. A and 802.11b/g, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP; the second model will get 3G GSM in place of EV-DO for sale in other parts of the world. Like the iPhone, it also touts a light sensor, proximity sensor, and accelerometer. One critical thing to note for business users and frequent flyers: the Sprint version of the phone -- likely the first to be released -- will not be a global phone, meaning it can't be used on GSM networks overseas.

Windows 7 performs better than XP and Vista

Windows 7 beta is already outperforming Windows XP and Vista in some informal real-world tasks like boot up, shut down, file maneuvers, installations and other common tasks. ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes tested the OS on two test systems, an AMD Phenom 9700 setup and an Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 number (with ATI and NVIDIA graphics, respectively).

Samsung Yepp YP-P3

Samsung Yepp YP-P3 PMP is on the way. Looks like it's getting an official launch in Korea just ahead of CES.

The Samsung Yepp YP-P3 even has a built-in speaker for those who do not always like to use a headset. 2009 proves to be a very exciting year for PMP and touchscreen devices of all kinds with every new device we hear about.

Specs are :
  • 3-inch, 480 x 272 touchscreen as the P2, but with added haptic feedback and
  • a new Flash-based UI with customizable widgets,
  • Bluetooth with A2DP,
  • the usual codec support for MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC audio, AVI/SVI MPEG4., WMV, H.264/AVC videos and JPEG, BMP images. and
  • a 30-hour audio playback battery life.

No US prices yet, but the Koreans out there should look to have scrounged together 239,000 won ($177) for the 4GB, 279,000 won ($207) for 8GB, and 329,000 won ($244) for the 16GB model by the time these ship in early January.
