Firefox for mobile market in 2008

Firefox developer team has announced that they will bring the browser to the mobile market in 2008.

Mozilla will add mobile devices to the first class/tier-1 platform set for Mozilla2, the next-generation browser technology due in 2008, Mike Schroepfer wrote in the Mozillazine blog. "This means we will make core platform decisions with mobile devices as first-class citizens. We will ship a version of "Mobile Firefox" which can, among other things, run Firefox extensions on mobile devices and allow others to build rich applications via XUL."

While Firefox has had a persistent reputation of being a "fatter" (i.e., more resource-intensive) browser than rivals like Opera, Schroepfer said that mobile hardware is finally catching up with the software. A Mozilla-based browser has already been released for the Nokia N800.

Canon's $100 handheld phto printer

Digital photography is well accepted now. It has almost replaced the traditional film based photo media with the ease of sharing the photos on internet and low cost of printing.

Sharing photos on net is alright, but people still love to share their photos in print format. People love to stack them in albums and circulate them. Now that means you have to go to a photo lab to request the prints, to make it more convenient Canon has launched a portable printer named SELPHY CP740 .

Canon's SELPHY compact photo printer aims to address this - it's a full lab-color 4" x 6" photo printer that prints straight from a camera or memory card, and is small enough to be called handheld. Its dye-sublimation printing process is similar to what your local photo processing shop uses.

The SELPHY Compact Photo Printer features a two-inch color LCD display, red-eye correction and multiple direct printing options that cut the computer out of the printing process and can print straight from a camera or memory card. It prints borderless, full-photo lab quality, 4”x6” image in approximately 58 seconds

The SELPHY's two-inch color LCD screen enables consumers to view their images and select only their favorite images to print.

The Canon SELPHY CP740 Compact Photo Printer will be available soon for an estimated selling price of US$99.99.

General Dynamics UMPC GoBook VR2

General Dynamics has launched a rugged notebook or UMPC named Gobook VR2. It was due since their acquisition of Itronix.

The product features 13.3-inch transflective screen, which is not a typical display, thanks to the Dynavue outdoor screen technology that GD-Itronix developed. This new technology uses polarizing techniques and a multi-layered coating to reduce sunlight reflection. The result is a better-contrast ratio. Images also appear brighter despite a NIT rating of only 500 (NIT ratings can go as high as 1,000 with outdoor screens). The benefits are obviously better contrast and brightness of the screen, resulting it is more viewable under the sun.

An Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz) processor, 2GB of RAM, and Draft 802.11n support give you better performance on the scale. It comes standard with an 80GB hard drive and a WWAN module that will let you fit either an EVDO or HSDPA cellular modem. It has a GPS antenna built in and a stylus for use with the touch screen functions. Retail price for the VR-2 will start at $3,500.

Microsoft keen to takeover Yahoo Inc.

According to some media reports Microsoft is keen to buy Yahoo as the business of networking is growing.

Few months back Microsoft approached Yahoo with the offer of $50 billions, but it was turned down then, but some sources say they have opened the communications again for a possible merger or takeover.

The impact of this deal will be obviously on Google's share of internet business and net advertising to be precise.

Microsoft is a giant compared to Yahoo, but the software major's revenues from online businesses are paltry compared to Yahoo. A possible pact between the two companies could help both, as Yahoo will help power Microsoft's online earnings and in turn will get a lot more MS-backed muscle in return.

Samsung to start mass producing 16 gb Nand flash

Samsung Electronics will be the first to begin mass producing 16 gigabit (Gb) NAND flash, so far the highest capacity memory chip now available. The company said it will fabricate the devices in 51 nanometers (nm), the finest process technology to be used in memory mass production to date.

“In rolling out the densest NAND flash in the world, we are throwing open the gates to a much wider playing field for flash-driven consumer electronics,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. “To minimize production costs and improve performance, we have applied the finest process technology a ‘half generation’ ahead of the industry, which is introducing 55nm and higher.”

Samsung’s 51nm NAND flash chips can be produced 60 percent more efficiently than those produced with 60nm process technology.

The new 16Gb chip which has a multi-level cell (MLC) structure can facilitate capacity expansion by offering 16 gigabytes (GBs) of memory in a single memory card. Furthermore, by applying the new process technology, Samsung has accelerated the chip’s read and write speeds by approximately 80 percent over current MLC data processing speeds.

Samsung announces silent and speedy S series hard drives

Samsung has announced its new SpinPoint S166 Series of ultra silent and high-speed hard disk drives. The 3.5” SpinPoint S166 hard drives are currently shipping in 80GB and 160GB capacities and will be available worldwide in April.

The new SpinPoint S Series of hard drives are 15 percent silent and faster than the earlier versions using improved SilentSeekTM and NoiseGuardTM technologies to accelerate operational speed while reducing noise. This significant fifteen percent noise-level reduction makes the drives ideal for use in office computers, as well as in home consumer electronics such as DVR/ PVRs, or any other hard drive equipped products intended for use in a quiet environment.

According to Samsung, three breakthrough technologies are implemented in the new S Series to enhance performance and reliability. An improved fly-height control technology ensures better read and write sensitivity by dynamically lowering the fly height in read or write mode while maintaining a consistent and high fly-height across the disc in standard mode; an optimized actuator assembly for single-disk mechanism reinforces the reliability of the disk’s mechanical functions and improves the non operating and operating shock characteristics of the drive; and an upgraded system-on-chip (SoC) controller provides significant thermal, disk data transfer speed, and power consumption enhancements.

The S166 Series has a spin speed of 7,200rpm and provides an 8MB buffer. The Series features the SATA 3.0Gbps interface and includes Native Command Queuing (NCQ). The drives are also available with a PATA interface for customers who require this application.

Company says the price, per gigabyte, of SSD storage will continue to go down while capacities shoot upwards once consumers realize they can opt out of rotating disk drives for the "superior experience of SSDs."

Company claims it is there 5th generation SSD, SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" is based on technology that has been field-proven for over a decade in the harshest of environments. It uses NAND flash enhanced by our patented TrueFFS® flash management technology. SanDisk SSD delivers an outstanding two million hour mean time between failure (MTBF)1. This superior level results in reduced tangible costs, such as IT labor costs, while also decreasing intangible costs associated with inaccessible data.

With no moving parts, SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" does not need to spin up into action or to seek files in the way that conventional hard disk drives do, while also eliminating the limitations of random seek performance. These characteristics, combined with SanDisk advanced flash management technology, enable SanDisk SSD to achieve performance that is approximately twice as fast as the hard disk drive. SanDisk SSD SATA 5000 2.5" achieves a sustained read rate of 67-megabyte (MB)*/sec and a random read rate of 7000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) for a 512-byte transfer.

SanDisk is claiming that it can boot Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise in as little as 30 seconds and can access files at an average speed of 0.11 milliseconds—compared to the 48 seconds it would take to boot and 17 milliseconds to access files on a notebook using a hard disk drive.

A new digital photo format from Microsoft : HD Photo

A new digital photo format that offers higher-quality images with better compression will soon submit to an international standards organization according to Microsoft.

The format, named HD Photo was previously known as 'Windows Media Photo' will rival the industry standard JPEG format, a 15-year-old technology widely used in digital cameras and image applications.

Both JPEG and HD Photo formats take images and use compression to make the file sizes smaller so more photos can fitted in lesser size on disk or memory card. Trade of to this is quality loss. But, Microsoft claims HD Photo's lightweight algorithm causes less damage to photos during compression, with higher-quality images that are half the size of a JPEG.

The format can also accommodate "lossless" and "lossy" compression, two methods of compressing photo data with different effects on image quality. Microsoft said adjustments can be made to color balance and exposure settings that won't discard or truncate data that occurs with other bit-map formats.

Intel's phase-change memories

Intel is working on new type of memories called phase-change memory technology, called PRAM by Intel and PCM. This technology is set to sample in the first half of this year. They plan to ship the first PRAM modules as a straight-ahead NOR flash replacement, so that they can test the design before trying to move it up the ladder in the memory hierarchy.

The memories are claimed to have much higher number of read-write cycles (100 million) than flash, as well as a potential 10 years' worth of data retention. NOR flash is typically used as program storage memory for mobile devices like cell phones, while more durable but slower (for random read access, but not sequential bursts) NAND flash is used for mass storage in devices like the iPod nano.

The phase-change memories claimed to be potential flash-killer are actively researched by Intel, IBM, Samsung, Hitachi and many others. PCM's advantages over flash are numerous, and in fact the technology gets us closer to the Holy Grail of computer memory, i.e., a nonvolatile medium with a small cell size and fast access times, sort of like DRAM but without the volatility and the refresh circuitry. However, PRAM doesn't quite get us all the way there.

Competing technology from Hitachi boasts a 20ns read latency. This is much better than the 50ns to 90ns read latency typical of flash memory, but it's not even close to DDR2's ~3ns latency. If Intel's PRAM is in the same ballpark as Samsung's technology, then it won't be used as the main memory on your computer anytime soon.

Samsung has already demonstrated a 512Mbit PRAM chip, and has announced plans to offer a full lineup of PRAM products sometime in 2008. The company began sampling 256Mbit and 512Mbit parts produced on a 90nm process to mobile phone manufacturers at the end of last month.

Sony Ericsson W950i

Sony Ericsson W950i is a stylish 4GB music and video player that fits into your pocket, surfs the Web, syncs your calendar and contacts, and even checks your e-mail. No its not the iPhone, the Sony Ericsson W950i is available now, and it's a great choice for music lovers, as long as they don't care about fast Internet access.

Chocolate brown with orange accents colored W950i is a beautiful piece of work. It is rock solid gadget in your hand, yet light enough in handling. A large, 320-by-240 touch screen with a completely flat phone keypad below it. Little raised dots on the pad make a feeble attempt at helping you distinguish between pressing the "3" and the "6" keys. Volume and play/pause buttons are on one side. On the other side there's a back button, a scroll wheel, and a slot for a narrow, easy-to-hold stylus.

This is a real smartphone, running the Symbian operating system with the simple-to-use UIQ 3.0 interface, and it works just like an ordinary music phone.

MP3 patents dispute

As the federal jury's $1.52 billion patent infringement award goes against the Microsoft and its allies and in favor of Alcatel-Lucent for the two patents they hold, many questions remains unanswered.

It's difficult to say which companies will be affected by Thursday's award. MP3 users have traditionally been subject to two sets of rules for using the codec, one for encoding, and another for playback after decoding. If the two patents upheld by the jury today apply only to products that encode audio into MP3s, the ruling would affect only companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo and others offering software that lets consumers make their own MP3 files or MP3 encoding software.

If it covers playback too, every company involved even tangentially with MP3 stands to lose big. Microsoft's licensing bill for Thomson/Fraunhofer was only $16 million -- about 1 percent of what it now owes Alcatel-Lucent. A significant number of the companies who offer MP3 encoders and/or players could face a similar judgment, with many being driven out of business.

Although Thomson is widely accepted as the licensor of Fraunhofer's MP3 codec, Alcatel-Lucent holds two MP3-related patents upheld by a jury.

SanDisk 32GB flash drive

Sooner than later your hard disk drive will be replaced by solid state memories, SanDisk is looking to replace hard drive in your laptop with a 1.8-inch solid state 32GB flash drive. The company says its cool-running SSD Ultra ATA 5000 1.8" drive is a drop-in replacement for those old-fashioned mechanical hard disks. It packs the performance, too, with a 62MB-per-second read speed while using less than half the battery power of conventional discs.

It is 100 times faster than most hard disks, letting the thing boot Microsoft Windows Vista in 35 seconds. It's much smaller than the 2.5-inch 32GB flash drive Samsung introduced last March, but it's still rather pricey, adding around $600 to a laptop in which it resides.

Next Generation Li-ion batteries from A123 Systems

A123 systems’s has claimed to produce next generation Li-ion batteries. These are high power batteries based on highly active nanoscale materials that is as per their claim is inexpensive, nontoxic, and extremely stable in electrochemical systems. A123Systems’ high power chemistry is based on proprietary compositions with much higher charge and discharge rates.

To be specific about the technology behind this breakthrough company website states that

Li Ion technology uses active materials with particles that range in size between 5 and 20 microns. These large particles are required to minimize safety risks inherent to first-generation Li Ion chemistries. A123 high power batteries are based on a safe and stable active material that can use particle sizes below 100nm without adverse reaction. This new storage electrode enables much faster kinetics providing higher power than is possible from any other Li Ion chemistry. Furthermore, to take advantage of the power delivered by this new chemistry, A123 has developed novel electrode and cell designs that provide the lowest impedance of any battery of its size, and a new electrolyte system that operates over a much wider temperature range. This new stable cell chemistry is environmentally friendly and inherently safe…

Their claims seems to be substantiated with the partnerships they have formed with the big names in the industry like General Motors, General Electrics, USABC and COBASYS for batteries powering hybrid electric vehicles.

These batteries are having over 100c pulse discharge rates with 5 minutes recharge, higher cycle life and temperature performance. They are intrinsically safe by design and environ friendly also.

Alternative to electrochemical batteries

You can carry on if you don't eat for a day, but it is difficult to go on without charging your batteries, I mean your cell phone batteries, your camera batteries, your iPod batteries, taking it to worst soon to be yours electric vehicle's batteries. Yeah, but every problem has a solution and it's good that in this obscure world there are people who are working hard to solve your problems, albeit at a price.

The news that a secretive Texas startup EEStor has claimed that they are developing alternative energy storage for upcoming alternative energy resources is a welcome breather. New product is a battery--ultracapacitor hybrid based on barium-titanate powders, will dramatically outperform the best lithium-ion batteries on the market in terms of energy density, price, charge time, and safety, which will replace the electro-chemical batteries of your days. According to the company it will be 10 times more efficient than the lithium-ion batteries and environ friendly .

Much like capacitors, ultracapacitors store energy in an electrical field between two closely spaced conductors, or plates. When voltage is applied, an electric charge builds up on each plate.

Ultracapacitors have many advantages over traditional electrochemical batteries. Unlike batteries, "ultracaps" can completely absorb and release a charge at high rates and in a virtually endless cycle with little degradation.

Where they're weak, however, is with energy storage. Compared with lithium-ion batteries, high-end ultracapacitors on the market today store 25 times less energy per pound.

This is why ultracapacitors, with their ability to release quick jolts of electricity and to absorb this energy just as fast, are ideal today as a complement to batteries or fuel cells in electric-drive vehicles. The power burst that ultracaps provide can assist with stop-start acceleration, and the energy is more efficiently recaptured through regenerative braking--an area in which ultracap maker Maxwell Technologies has seen significant results.

Solid state Disk Drive unveiled by Samsung

The first hard disk drive was part of a computer system built by IBM in the mid 1950's called IBM 305 RAMAC, it occupied almost half a room, cost around $50,000, and had only 5 Mb of storage.

Since then, technical improvements lead hard drives to become continuously smaller, cheaper, and their storage capacities have grown over 100,000-times. Although the basic technology has remained the same. Rapidly spinning platters coated with ferromagnetic material hold the data, while a special actuator arm equipped with a read/write head hovers just above it.

Despite the fact that this technology reached a very high level of maturity in recent years, it still suffers from a number of basic limitations due mainly to its mechanical nature. Hard drives are vulnerable to shock, consume relatively high amounts of power in order for the platters to spin, produce a large amount of heat, and take time to start.

Mean while since the advent in 1984 from Toshiba and subsequent introduction of it as a commercial product by Intel, flash prices continue to decline 50% annually and sometimes even at higher rates. Although hard disk drives still have the price edge , analysts agree that the trend in cost reduction is expected to continue. The recent success of MP3 players based on flash memory has contributed greatly to high volumes and, therefore, reduced prices of the media. With the newer technology flash could be able to deliver enough capacity in small footprint.

Samsung has unveiled a consumer Solid State Disk (SSD), which will be tested out on laptops and portable devices first. Releasing 32 GB 1.8” and 2.5” SSDs inside a laptop and an ultra-portable mobile computer, costing $2,430 and $3,700, respectively, in Korea.
